An early start this morning, everybody was up, dressed and out of the door by 7am as we had to refuel the hire car before hand back and check in for the ferry by 07:45. Accomplished this with ease so no stress this morning. Wet and windy in Wellington when we left and the crossing was very rough and even the ferry captain described it as "less than favourable conditions".
The water went completely calm, much to Jenny's relief, as we traveled up Queen Charlotte Sound and it was quite picturesque. We had left Wellington in low cloud, rain and high winds (and apparently even snow) and yet three hours later we were cruising under blue skies. Quite bizarre.
Getting off the ferry, collecting our luggage and picking up the new hire car (very new, only 1200 kms) was all straight forward so we headed up the road into town and had lunch in a cafe overlooking the harbour. Went to our motel and our unit was ready so we piled in with our luggage to a modern 2 storey apartment that is our home for the night. Put it this way, it's not called "Harbour View Motel" for nothing either!
Jenny and I headed off to explore and do some grocery shopping and as the girls had unlimited wifi they were determined to get their fix so they stayed in the apartment. Picton has incredible views of the inlet/harbour/sound with so many house perched on hills with their cars up the hill off the road and their boats/yachts moored out the front. Looks like a great place to retire to if you like boats!
Back to the unit and tried to enjoy a drink sitting on the balcony enjoying the twilight but it just got too cold and had to head indoors. Apparently it will be about minus 2 here tonight! Cooked up steak and salad for dinner and now just relaxing on the lounges now before early bed in preparation for part 2 of the holiday.
