Thursday 10 June 2021 – Slice of heaven
A pack up day but we took our time as it won’t take us long to get to Kununurra from El Questro. Back down the dusty and, still bumpy, driveway for 16km and then it was time to pump up the tyres, put the weight distribution spring bars back on (these had to come off on the Gibb as they hang too low and would have constantly been dragging in the rocks and mud of the creek crossings) and it was back on the blissfully smooth bitumen.
Drove into Kununurra town and went to the Wild Mango cafe for club sandwiches and mango smoothies and then quick stops at the hardware store and auto store so that we can do some running repairs/maintenance to the car and van. Larry had not been impressed to note that the bumpy trips around El Questro yesterday had jiggled the headlight/indicator connection loose again so now we have a soldering iron to fix the problem for good.
Back to camp and the car was given a good clean in the wash down bay so now it is silver again instead of grey. Meanwhile Jen did laundry and went through the fridges getting rid of anything that had mushed up or gone past its used by date in the past couple of weeks. Not too bad – we really just need to stock up on fresh milk, eggs, vegetables and bread.
After a few hours of chores, the lure of chairs on the grassy bank next to the lake became too strong and we headed down there to just sit and watch the birdlife and the boat life and even a float plane take off and land in front of us. As usual, chatted to fellow travellers about their vans and their journeys and eventually headed back to the van where we could finally watch the telly we have been lugging around for weeks to watch Geelong thump Port Adelaide (great, yet another footy tip down to the drain!). We ate sausages and tinned spaghetti and the remainder of the still edible salad vegetables for dinner then an early tonight. There are birds here that go ‘woof woof’ over and over again at night but you get used to them and they don’t keep you awake for long!
