Saturday 5 June 2021 – A slightly disappointing day
An early start as we had a bit of a drive so a quick coffee and finish of the pack up and we were off by 7am which is possibly a new world record. Still not as good as our neighbours who had their rooftop tent packed up before 6am (and therefore possibly woke us even though they were extremely quiet doing so). An enjoyable drive out as we negotiated the numerous creek crossings closer to Mornington and arrived at the Gibb at roughly 9am. After a few kms the road become heavily corrugated and was like that until Galvins gorge where the corrugations became less arduous and we could sit on 60kms/hr.
Stopped at Mt Barnett road house to refuel and rest both ourselves the the car/van as they take a pounding on the rough roads. Did a walk around and all seemed to be in one piece so we sat at the picnic table under the trees and had some hot chips and a Coke. Very wicked so today may need to be renamed Satanic Saturday.
Headed on and further east. Upon reaching the turn off to Mt Elizabeth we thought that the road in would be like the other access roads, a bit bumpy, creek crossings and straight forward. It was straight forward but very rough and heavily corrugated. We noticed that the Indigenous Community, Dodnun, was a no go zone this year (probably because of COvid) whereas two years ago they had a little store and advertised all their wares on signs nailed to trees for the first 5km of the access road. We finally made it to Mt Elizabeth Homestead and checked in only to be told there was no access to the two water holes/gorges so basically nothing to do. We decided pretty quickly that we would forgo our second night and make for Ellenbrae and spend 2 nights there as they have a couple of places to swim and it is 100kms further along the road.
Last time we stayed here we bought internet access via the WiFi so tried that again so we could check up with family, footy etc. Alas, that wasn’t working either so a disappointing end to the day.
Finally we had a cool night so it was good to sleep without the fans on and it was a quiet campground. Also the amenity blocks are still really good and there was free use of a big washing machine so we took advantage and got all our sheets and towels as well as a load of clothes down so it wasn’t all bad and we both slept well.
