Tuesday May 30 – Kununurra
Today was the first day in a while where we didn’t have anything particular planned so it was a lazy lie in and Jen got treated to tea and toast in bed.
A few little chores done and then we hopped in the Cruiser and wended our way down to Ivanhoe Crossing to see whether it has opened yet. Amazing to think how high the water was a few months ago and we had seen photos showing the rock mounted sign with water lapping over the top of it. The water seemed to be back down almost to the usual level although still too high and fast flowing to allow vehicles to cross. There are still big concrete blocks plonked at both ends in case anyone is foolhardy enough to try.
Hopped back in the car and drove past the Sandalwood Factory, where the Adamsons were shopping up a storm, and on to the Hoochery. Jenny practically had to trot to keep up with the boys as they charged inside and we soon all had a tasting paddle of rums, gins or a mix of both. Quite a few nice ones to choose from and a couple of new ones meant that, in the end, we had to forgo old favourites and buy the new gin which is aged in the rum barrel and hence is an interesting hybrid of the two.
We found a table outside under the shadesails and the Adamsons soon joined us so that we all had lunch together. J&L shared a steak sandwich so that we could also indulge in dessert. Sadly they no longer have the yummy rum and raisin ice cream so L made do with an ice cream sandwich and J tried the rum and raisin cheesecake so we were quite consoled.
We headed back into town and checked out the camping stores whilst S made a quick dash to Coles as he is on cooking duties tonight. We found a new tea towel/wrap for the BBQ utensils to replace the one at the bottom of Lake Argyle and poked around but not much else we need for the camping life these days.
Back in the car and back to camp where we undertook some more laundry duties etc before taking our chairs down to the lakeside next to the Adamson’s van to watch the sunset. A very still day today so lovely reflections of the hills in the lake and then the thousands of fruit bats flying across the sky as the sun slowly set. We then relocated the chairs to under the Adamsons awning and Shaun cooked up yummy pizzas on the BBQ. J&L had a tour of the Adamson’s very nice Urban caravan. It certainly seems very palatial compared to our squashed living quarters but it’s swings and roundabouts as our van can go places theirs can’t. Still, we are looking forward to a few more of their creature comforts in the future retirement van!
Another lovely evening was had and then a short wander back to our van for showers and bed.
