Saturday 26 June 2021 – Just a touch of paradise
We only stirred about 5.30am when Hendrik and Miranda left their van and headed to the caravan park entry to be picked up for the flight to Horizontal Falls and then slept on for another hour or so. Bacon and egg sandwiches for breakfast and then Larry, with a look of determination, popped the bonnet of the Jeep and had one last go at fixing the headlight issue. Jenny took advantage in the lull in proceedings to sit down and catch up with quite a few days worth of blog.
I think we just about both finished our respective tasks at the same time as Hendrik and Miranda returned from their morning tour. They had had a wonderful experience but were feeling the effects of their early morning and were keen to have lunch and a nap. As we had been sitting in the caravan park all morning, we were keen to get out and remember we were actually in Broome so we left them to it and hopped into the Jeep with its wonderfully working left hand indicator.
We headed into Chinatown and had lunch at the Green Mango Cafe (a shared hamburger and thick shakes made super thick with globs of ice cream) then wandered around the shops for a while. Shire of Broome has spent a lot of money of streetscape improvements through this area and, although only half complete, it all looks quite fancy. The Shire just hopes that some of the planting stays in place as apparently quite a lot of it goes missing over night!
We popped in to Best and Less and bought a couple of extra clothes to replace things that haven’t really lasted the distance and then to the bottle shop to top up supplies before we leave town.
It was then time to head to Woolies and do another big grocery shop ready for the next week of being in the middle of nowhere. We met H &M in the cheese aisle and checked we had all things covered, then we headed back to the van in convoy.
Another game of caravan tetris fitting all the new foodstuffs and other paraphernalia into the van and then it was time to get changed into the smartest clothes we own. H & M, wanting to thank us (but mainly Larry) for all we had done to help them with their various caravan catastrophes had offered to take us out to dinner as a thank you.
We all hopped into the Jeep and, as it was still before sunset we headed down onto Cable Beach and drove along on the sand for a while before parking up and hopping out just as the various caravans of camels started walking by. There was quite a lot of cloud cover around so we are able to get some very nice pre-sunset photos with us in the foreground and camels in the background. We hopped back in the car and joined the line up of cars trying to get back off the beach and up the ramp.
Nabbed a spot in the carpark (not easy as Cable Beach is always popular and even more so at sunset) and then headed in to the Sunset Bar and Grill for a very lavish meal. We shared a garlic bread but then all had a main course AND dessert. The food was delicious and very rich so that we were all in a bit of a food coma by the end. A very big thank you to H & M for their generosity, the reward was was not required as we were both brought up to help your friends any way you can.
It was a lovely evening and we did indeed get to see the sun set as we sat there drinking our pre dinner drinks so the place lived up to its name alright! Sitting there in quite a fancy setting eating dinner with an exotic view gave us the feeling of being on holiday at a resort instead of being on a caravanning trip which, let’s be honest, can be quite hard work sometimes. So a very nice evening was had and then we all went home and fell into bed with the only work left to do being to digest our dinners.
