Vegas to Grand Canyon
Left Vegas round 9am and found the highway out easily and we
were off on the endless 4 lane highways. We played dodge the trucks for hours
today as we must have been on the main trucking routes of the area.
We topped up with fuel near Henderson and headed to the
Hoover Dam. We first went up the bridge to get a view of the dam and it is
impressive. Tick, another thing done from the list. We inadvertently turned the
wrong way out of the bridge car park and, unable to perform a U turn, we had to
drive across the dam. Very slowly as
there were people everywhere. We then managed to turn around, did the dam wall again and then
headed towards the freeway and off again
sitting on 75 mph for miles.
Stopped at Kingman for lunch and to swap drivers. Not a bad burger at Carl Jr’s (very reminiscent
of HJ’s) and clean toilets and very friendly staff and off again on the
freeway/highway. There were a lot of highway patrol and state trooper cars on
the road and most of the time they had trucks pulled up. Something that you don’t see every day in
Perth on the other side of the road is a
truck pulled up with a highway patrol
car about 50 meters behind it. The trooper had his door open and an M16 rifle pointed
at the truck. Another patrol car closed in on us and then turned across the gap
in between the roads , obviously to help his colleague. Two guns in two days. Well that was cool.
Other than that the day was mile upon mile of country
driving on the highways. We pulled into Valle and there was an aircraft museum
there so there was no way the Impala was going to go past that without Jenny
wanting to see the old aircraft. Well Jenny was like a kid in a candy shop, she
was just so excited. There was quite a few planes of various age in the hangar
with displays/souvenirs amongst them.
Approx 90% of the planes are flyable and do so. Had a chat to the lady behind
the desk and purchased a couple of items and eventually dragged Jenny away and
we were off to our final destination of the Grand Hotel just outside the park
ranger entrance to the Grand Canyon. Checked in OK, back out to the grocery
store and off into the GC park to get a view of what all the fuss is about.
Well we got out at the car park near Mather Point, walked
less than 5 minutes and there it was. The canyon is spectacular, impressive and
every adjective you could think of. It really is one of the natural wonders of
the world. We took the obligatory pictures but no camera, whether a phone or a
very expensive SLR camera would do it justice. A kind bloke offered to take a
photo of Jenny and Larry with the canyon behind us and it a great pic. He redeemed himself by taking it as he had
been very annoying hogging the platform taking photos of his wife doing various
peace poses (yes, guess which nationality!)
After the initial viewing we are going to explore more of it
tomorrow so back into the Impala to the hotel where we had some dinner and are relaxing
now in the room.
